COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will explore vulnerabilities within the brain injury population related to access to care for individuals we may be missing in traditional models of rehabilitation care. We will explore social determinants of health and factors contributing to
health disparities, drawing attention to those who are underserved and underfunded, and discussing the connection between brain injury and those who experience intimate partner violence (IPV), human trafficking (HT), and the criminal justice system. This course will build awareness of where gaps exist and how healthcare professionals can approach screening, assessment, and intervention to address inequities and improve access to care. Practical tools, expert guidance, and community resources will be shared throughout the day to better equip providers to bridge the gap in services, prevent or reduce vulnerability, and navigate brain injury recovery for these individuals.

OBJECTIVES: At the completion of the course, participants will be able to:
1. Describe characteristics associated with vulnerable populations and brain injury.
2. Identify four risk factors specific to brain injury that make individuals more susceptible to human trafficking, IPV and incarceration.
3. Identify gaps in service delivery that create vulnerabilities for individuals with brain injury.
4. Describe interdisciplinary treatment approaches that should be considered when working with vulnerable populations.
5. Identify opportunities to enhance the model of care for vulnerable individuals within the clinical setting.
6. Generate three solutions to promote access to healthcare and network with community agencies.
7. Discuss methods to increase resource utilization for the management of brain injury sequelae.
